Beer 006 - Quilmes Cerveza

July 24, 2010

Quilmes Cerveza, brewed and bottled in Argentina, bought at Fiesta Liquor, drunk at home in Katy, TX. Quilmes is majority owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. This beer is by far the biggest selling beer in Argentina with more than 70% of the market. Bought back memories of a visit Tom Monroe and I made to Argentina and Chile in the early 80’s and for some reason we made a visit to Punta Arenas on the southern tip of South America.
website in Spanish: http://www.quilmes.com.ar/
Australian web site in English: http://www.quilmes.com.au/

The Australian web site says "Argentina’s favourite beer comes from the capital, Buenos Aires. It is a premium 4.9% lager style beer, made from the finest hops sourced from Patagonia and using the purest water from the Andes mountain range.
Quilmes is one of the biggest and most popular beers in South America and has become something of a national symbol of the Argentinean people, using the traditional colours of the Argentinean flag in its branding. Quilmes also proudly sponsors the Argentinean national football team, making it a high profile beer globally.
El sabor del encuentro as the Argentineans like to say (The flavor of the encounter). Enjoy!"

Golden yellow in color with a slight head in the glass. I thought this was a well balanced lager with a nice depth of taste that lasts well. Easy and pleasant to drink.

The reviewers on Beer Advocate did not really like the beer, the 185 reviewers give it an average of  C- (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1252/3637)  Rate Beer reviewers are even less kind (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/quilmes-cristal/7485/) giving the beer a score of 4/100 0verall and 35/100 in its class of Pale Lagers.
