Beer 009 - Mendocino Eye of the Hawk

July 27, 2010
Mendocino Brewing Co Eye of the Hawk Select Ale, brewed in Ukiah, CA bought at Trader Joe's in Camarillo, CA and drunk at home in Katy, TX while cooking dinner.
A strong 8.0% alc/vol. The bottle says "this award winning brew is handcrafted to perfection. A premium American Classic from a Pioneer Brewing Legend."  The web site adds, "It is an excellent, rich bodied ale that is "Bottle Conditioned" to perfection. "Eye" is coppery reddish-amber in color and its unique taste is the result of a judicious mix of caramel and pale malted barley, balanced with Cluster, Cascade and Saaz hops. This gives the Eye its luxurious flavor, substantial mouth-feel and that slightly dry finish. Eye of the Hawk has garnered a cult following that is enviable"
The beer is cloudy like an unfiltered beer and has an orange hint in the amber color. It tastes strong and powerful, the slight bitterness adds to the flavor and there are interesting nuances of citrus in the background. I like this beer a lot.
