North Coast Brother Thelonious

September 25th 2011

5 stars out of 5

Brewed and bottled by North Coast Brewing Co, Fort Bragg, CA. Bought at the HEB store in Cinco Ranch and drunk at home in Katy, TX as an aperitif while preparing dinner of shrimp fried rice. I enjoyed this beer a lot, so dinner took a little longer than usual to prepare as I savoured the beer.

North Coast Brewing American Artisan Series. A Belgian style abbey ale.

The web site: http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/beer-brotherThelonious.htm

The bottle says "We at North Coast Brewing Co. are serious jazz fans and we're proud to make a donation to the jazz education programs of the Tholonious Monk Institute of Jazz (www.monk institute.org) for every bottle of Brother Thelonious sold.  The web site adds “Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”, the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9.3%. The package is a 750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish or 12oz 4 packs and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.

Vital Statistics: Style: Belgian Style Strong Dark, Color: Dark mahogany, ABV: 9.4%., Bitterness: 32 IBU's”

A delightful beer, nice color in the glass and a nice head that stayed. Interesting full bodied taste that was full of flavor. Good balance, holding the flavor without the bitterness from over-hopping. This is a .'premier grand cru classe" beer, a beer that can be cellared for the future and should be saved for special occasions where it can be savored.9.5% abv

The 1,099 people who rated this beer at Ratebeer.com agreed with me.  They give the beer a score of 3.63 which equates to the 96th percentile overall and the 91st percentile in it’s category of Belgian Strong Ale.  (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/north-coast-brother-thelonious/58540/ )
