Shiner Old Time Alt

September 23rd, 2011

Score 2.5 out of 5

Brewed and bottled by Shiner Brewing at the Spoetzl  Brewery, Shine, TX .   Bought in a 12 pack of six different Shiner beers called the “Shiner Family Reunion” at a silent auction held in our office at ITW Global Brands to benefit United Way.  Drank at home in Katy, TX as an aperitif while preparing dinner of chopped beef steaks, onion-roast potatoes and steamed red cabbage.

web site: http://www.shiner.com/main.php?page=beer Old Time Alt is not mentioned anywhere on the web page as far as I could see

The bottle says “ Born in Dussseldorf, Brewed in Shiner.  The Shiner Brewing Association and original brew master Kosmos Spoetzl began an old world brewing tradition that continues today in Shiner, Texas. This copper colored, medium to full bodied Dusseldorf-style ale features a balance of malts and hops. A long-lasting creamy head and a dry smooth finish. This small batch brew is our first brewers pride selection, and we hope you savor every sip. Prosit.

The beer was somewhat lifeless. It was a beautiful golden brown color, clear and slightly effervescent in the glass, but the taste did not live up to the looks. There was no character in the taste, the bitterness of the hops left an unpleasant aftertaste that should not have been there. Not one of Shiner's best.

The 70 people who rated this beer at RateBeer.com were a little more impressed than I: (http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/shiner-old-time-alt/135927/  )  They gave it a score of 3.0 which puts it in the 46th percentile overall and the 44th percentile for its style of Altbier.

The 57 people who have rated this beer at BeerAdvocate.com thought the same.  They gave it a score of 3.63 which equates to a B = good (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/143/64657   )
