Jester King Wytchmaker Rye India Pale Ale

December 17, 2011

Score 2.5 stars out of 5

Brewed and bottled by Jester King craft brewery, Austin, TX. Bought at Specs on Fry Road in Katy, TX and drunk at home while preparing dinner of spring rolls, followed by stuffed baked potatoes. (stuffed with ground turkey and mushrooms and a spicy cheese dip, sour cream and grated cheese)

An somewhat hoppy taste and not very well balanced. The hops overpowered the malt, not worth the super premium price they are charging for the privilege. The beer was overly effervescent.  When first poured into the glass it produced more foam than liquid and it took several pours and much waiting between pours to get two thirds of a glass.  Not one to come back to.

The bottle, 25.4 Fl Oz in size says “The culprit behind the Salem Witch Trials was not demonic possession (which would have been kind of cool) but ergot infected rye.  The rye, malt and truckloads of hops in this ale aren’t likely to transform you into a witch, but maybe they’ll inspire you to think about your own transformation – perhaps into an individual: a free thinker, someone who speaks their mind and follows their dreams.  Personally we’d go with transforming into an army offlying Viking-bears, but what do we know.

Jester King Craft Brewery is an authentic farmhouse brewery in the beautiful Texas Hill Country on the outskirts of Austin.  We brew what we like, drink what we want and offer the rest to those who share our tastes.” Alc/vol 6.8%. drink at 45-50 deg f”

The web site says: ” India Pale Ale brewed with nearly three pounds of hops per barrel and 15% malted rye. Dry, flavorful, drinkable beer with vibrant notes of citrus, tropical fruit and pine.”
